Most Sacred Featured Attraction

Triveni Sangam

The Triveni Sangam is the confluence of three rivers: the Ganga, the Yamuna, and the mythical underground Saraswati. For over three millennia, this has been considered the holiest point in the Hindu spiritual universe — the Tirtharaj, the King of all pilgrimage sites.

From the bank you can see the two rivers clearly — the bluish-green of the Yamuna and the lighter, silty ochre of the Ganga — as they merge and swirl into one. The third river, the Saraswati, is said to flow unseen beneath both.

The Sangam is accessible only by boat. Boatmen at Sangam Ghat will row you to the confluence point and allow time for bathing, prayer, or quiet reflection. The journey takes 20–30 minutes each way and is most extraordinary at dawn.

Monuments & Heritage Sites

From Mughal fortifications to the homes of independence leaders — Prayagraj carries a remarkable density of historically significant architecture.

Allahabad Fort
Mughal · 1583

Allahabad Fort (Illahabad Qila)

Emperor Akbar's massive river-edge fortification houses the Patalpuri underground temple, the sacred Akshaya Vata (immortal banyan tree), and an original Ashoka Pillar. The fort remains partly a military cantonment, but its accessible spiritual precincts attract thousands of daily pilgrims.

Anand Bhawan
Museum · National Heritage

Anand Bhawan

The Nehru family home, donated to the Indian government by Indira Gandhi in 1970. A well-curated museum illuminating the family's role in the independence movement, with preserved period rooms, personal photographs, and a sound-and-light show in the evenings.

Khusro Bagh
Mughal Garden · 17th C

Khusro Bagh

A walled Mughal garden of quiet grandeur, containing the finely carved sandstone tombs of Prince Khusro, his mother Shah Begum, and his sister Nithar Begum. Few visitors find their way here, making it one of Prayagraj's most atmospheric and unhurried heritage sites.

Allahabad Museum

One of India's major regional museums, housing an extensive collection of stone sculptures from across Uttar Pradesh, Mughal miniature paintings, natural history specimens, and a significant collection of Nicholas Roerich's paintings. Well worth two to three hours of serious attention.

Temples & Ghat Experiences

The ghats and temples of Prayagraj form the city's spiritual infrastructure — active and alive in a way that no museum exhibit can fully convey.

Hanuman Temple (Reclining)

Spiritual · Unique

A partially subterranean temple containing a 20-foot reclining idol of Hanuman. Uniquely, the temple floods seasonally — an occurrence the local community accepts as a sign of devotion from the river. Standing before this idol is etched into many visitors' memories of Prayagraj.

Patalpuri Temple

Spiritual · Ancient

Located inside the Allahabad Fort, this underground temple is home to the Akshaya Vata — a sacred banyan tree mentioned in ancient texts. Ancient scripture holds that a single pilgrimage here brings liberation. The tree has been worshipped continuously for over two thousand years.

Saraswati Ghat & Yamuna Ghat

Riverfront · Spiritual

The ghats along the Yamuna offer a quieter, more intimate experience than the crowded Sangam approach. The evening Ganga Aarti ceremony here is performed at smaller scale but is no less moving. The stone steps at dusk, with the lamps being lit, is among the city's most beautiful daily sights.

Yamuna bank · Aarti at sunset

Mankameshwar Temple

Spiritual

A deeply revered Shiva temple positioned at the Yamuna riverbank. Best experienced during the early morning puja when the river mist is still present and the temple is active with devotional chanting and the smell of marigold and sandalwood offerings.

Yamuna bank · Morning puja: 5–8am

Alopi Devi Mandir

Shakti Pitha

One of India's 51 Shakti Pithas, this temple is unusual in that it houses a wooden palanquin (doli) rather than a conventional deity idol. The absence of an anthropomorphic idol gives the temple a profound, contemplative atmosphere quite unlike most others in the city.

Swaraj Bhawan

Museum · Heritage

The original Nehru family home, adjacent to Anand Bhawan, was donated to the Indian National Congress in 1930 and renamed Swaraj Bhawan (Home of Independence). Now a museum, it preserves the atmosphere of the political and intellectual world that shaped modern India.
